Mission Statement
Life Practice Counseling Group is a non-profit counseling agency offering fees on a sliding scale to the greater Sacramento Area based on monthly income or the client’s ability to pay.
We have two purposes; one as a charitable organization to the surrounding communities that offers these counseling services at a low cost that serves the under-privileged and low to middle class populations that would not otherwise be able to afford counseling services or who do not have mental health insurance.
The second purpose is to be a training facility for therapist’s who are collecting hours to obtain their licenses; this is how we are able to provide the low fees. Our mission both as a training facility and a charitable organization is to provide the most professional, ethical, and knowledgeable clinical treatment.

M.A., LMFT # 48768“My most valued aspect of the entire counseling process is the therapeutic relationship my clients and I form together as we journey to deeper self-understanding, self-acceptance, and a willingness to learn new ways of being in control.”
-Carisa SherwoodMy Areas of Expertise:
I am a wife and mother of three children that realizes that I have to work on my relationships with my loved ones and friends everyday. I realize it is not something to take for granted. I have been through a lot in my life and have done a great deal of personal growth. One of the reasons I decided to go into this field was because I have felt like I have been a “therapist” all of my life. I truly care for and have love for all of my clients, friends, family, and all people. Being of multi-cultural descent I feel I relate to all ethnicities, however my main culture is American. I find that I build a solid therapeutic relationship with my clients and your main goal becomes my goal. I will push when I need to push and back off when I need to back off. In my studies, I have knowledge and training in multiple theoretical orientations. However, I do not just practice one, I like to meet with someone first and then match the best method to the individual, couple, or situation. My preferences include experiential, psychodynamic, cognitive behavioral, and structural. My specialties include working with those struggling with personality disorders, LGBTQ, high conflict couples, helping couples build intimacy, sports psychology, teaching effective emotional processing techniques that directly improve reacting emotionally, anger impulses, depression, anxiety, decreasing shame and guilt, and effectively processing grief, loss, abuse, and/or trauma.
Education:
M.A. in Clinical Psychology with an emphasis in Marriage and Family Therapy from Chapman University. B.A. in Psychology from the University of California at Berkeley.

My Areas of Expertise:I enjoy working with diverse populations around attachment wounds, generational trauma, life transitions, and addiction. I also assist with psychedelic integration for individuals processing the larger meanings derived from healing mystical experiences.
My passion is to help humans cultivate grounded, emotionally intelligent, abundant lives. Therapeutically, my approach is based in acceptance and authentic curiosity + compassion using an attachment-based lens. Through this process, I begin to understand all parts of the person. So often on our life’s journey we are faced with challenges we don’t understand or struggle to overcome. This is where I come in – to help you make sense of it all. My goal is to create a space where you can explore areas of yourself or relationships that would otherwise feel too vulnerable to look at without the safety and guidance of our therapeutic relationship. I look forward to helping you grow into the person you want to be.
I love working with individuals, teens, and couples who are looking to process traumas and find deeper meaning in their lives.

Throughout our life experiences we sometimes become clouded by the obstacles that life throws at us, which may cause for our inner voice, your true self, to get pushed down in the process. This ultimately can lead to making decisions that we’re not happy with. My goal is to assist you with guiding out that inner voice into the open and utilizing it to work together to tackle present challenges, while providing an accepting and safe environment for you to be yourself. I believe you have an array of strengths, abilities and skills that can be utilized to assist with the challenges at hand. By bringing awareness to them and providing you with additional skills to add to your repertoire, it can help with keeping your true self from being silenced.
I enjoy working through a person-centered and multicultural point of view, to offer individualized treatment that will help us dictate which therapeutic approach would best serve your goals. My education, training and experience have prepared me to work with children, adolescents, adults, couples, a wide range of multicultural backgrounds, the LGBTQIA+ community, and a multitude of mental disorders/challenges. My goal for therapy is to provide a safe and welcoming space for you to grow, heal, and discover yourself. Starting therapy and reaching out for help can be scary. However, I believe it is worth it and rewarding to take the risk. Through building rapport and creating a therapeutic relationship, I hope to help work through whatever is brought into the office in a non-judgmental, collaborative way. It is important to me that identifying and highlighting strengths will be at the forefront of therapy to facilitate growth and destigmatize mental health concerns.
My training has prepared me to work with children, adolescents, individuals, couples, and families through a multicultural and trauma informed lens. I have extensive experience working with the LGBTQ+ and neurodivergent communities. I believe it is important to find what works for you on an individual level and break away from what life “should” look like. I am a mother, wife, student and therapist. Life takes us in many directions. I began my journey wanting to help children by becoming a social worker. Life took me in a different direction. Through working with children in foster care, I realized that my place was in helping them overcome and work through their difficulties. I have always been drawn to people that need help and are struggling with life stressors. I am passionate about helping people and learning about their life. I believe that we are the authors of our own story, and it is up to us to bring about change; however, sometimes we need a little guidance to get to where we want to get and overcome struggles that may seem out of our control. My go to therapeutic approaches are DBT, Psychodynamic, CBT and Experiential. I also believe that there is no right or wrong technique, and each individual case is different. I am a Reiki Master and incorporate it as a part of treatment when requested. I am also trained in Brainspotting and will utilize the technique as needed. I approach therapy with warmth, curiosity, humor, and heart.
I work with individuals and families, with a special focus on supporting couples. I embrace my clients just as they are, without judgment or expectation. My support is inclusive and mindful of the various factors that shape experience, such as race, gender, sexual orientation, and socioeconomic status.
Trauma and shame can deeply affect our lives, often in ways we may not fully understand. I use techniques from Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Emotionally Focused Therapy, and Compassion Focused Therapy, among others, to create a safe space where clients can explore their past without fear of re-traumatization. By staying present and attuned, I tailor my support to meet each client’s unique needs.
My ultimate goal is to help my clients find peace, acceptance, and self-compassion while directly addressing the problems they bring into counseling. No one comes to therapy because everything is going right. You’re here because things can’t go on like this. Something has to change. But what? That’s what I’m here for: to help you find a way forward. I believe that times of confusion and strife are also opportunities for breakthroughs. They call us to pause our old ways of thinking, and to begin the tough but rewarding exploration of our selves.
My goal is to help you help yourself. To do that, we’ll need to enter your pain in search of clarity. Eventually, that clarity will become your guiding light to a meaningful life.
Though I’m still in training, my background in understanding human life is deep and diverse. I’ve taught courses on depression and neuroscience, helped dose therapeutic psychedelics, and researched war and conflict. I’ve seen depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, personality disorders, PTSD, ADHD, autism, and more. I’m continuing to develop inexistential psychotherapy, acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), psychodynamic analysis, emotion-focused therapy (EFT), and cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). I am comfortable with and welcome trauma of all sorts.
To you, I will offer my ears, eyes, mind, and heart. In return, I need your honesty, courage, and hard work. I will guide you to the forest, but once there, you must lead the way. I’ll be right there with you.

My Areas of Expertise:
“When someone makes a decision, he is really diving into a strong current that will carry him to places he had never dreamed of when he first made the decision.” – Paul Coelho, The Alchemist
I imagine life as an ocean. As we sail through our journey, large waves may knock us off balance. Sometimes, we remain on course, but other times, those waves affect our sense of direction. We need to check our compass to help us navigate and find our way. My goal is to be a guide for others through their life journey.
I’ve always had empathy for those who are struggling. I was approached in middle school to become a peer counselor and continued to serve in this capacity through high school. Later, I became a junior varsity football coach where I taught more than just football skills, often finding that the young men needed life coaching as well. I have worked with young people, youth in the juvenile justice system, and children in foster care. I have assisted those struggling with substance use disorders and individuals of all ages experiencing anxiety, depression, relationship issues, and chronic pain.
Therapeutic Style:
In my studies, I learned that a lot of us are trying to find a balance between how we feel, how we think, and what we do. I believe that solutions to problems come from taking actions to change behavior. For this reason, I focus on Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), with the emphasis on behavior. I also ascribe to the principles of Choice Theory, which recognizes that people choose their own behaviors to meet their needs. Assessing how we think, acknowledging and responding to how we feel, both physiologically and emotionally, and evaluating our behaviors help us to better meet our needs and find our balance.
I believe that every individual is unique, so the methods used will be based on helping you make the changes you want. I want to help you find a sense of direction and discover effective tools to improve your situation and create a sense of wellbeing. Whether I’m given the opportunity to help children who just started to embark on their journey be steered away from the dark seas or a chance to throw a lifeline to someone already trapped in a current that is trying to pull them down, I want to share the navigational tools and life skills with those in need.

From personal experience, I understand how difficult asking for help can be – your internal voice may be criticizing you for not having all the answers to your problems right now. I am here to say that you can still be independent and successful without having to brave the hard times alone. My first goal as your therapist is to get to know you in all of your uniqueness. From there, we will work together to establish your goals with your distinct values and preferences at the forefront. A life well-lived is not an easy journey. I will be here to support you unconditionally as we work towards your goals so that we can get you back in the direction you would like to be heading.
One of my strengths includes individualizing your care – this means that I practice within my professional scope and capacity to curate our work around your unique needs, goals, and background. This includes, but is not limited to, knowing when to hold a safe space to explore your emotions and experiences and when to motivate you towards your goals when you need an extra push. I have extensive experience working with children with learning disabilities (ASD and more) and with mature senior clients. However, my education, experience, and training has prepared me to work with a wide variety of clients. I personally understand how intimidating this process is to begin. I want you to know that if you give me the chance, I will be here to help you over this first hurdle and to support you in all future hurdles.

I strive to create a warm, supportive environment where clients feel safe to explore their emotions, experiences, and relationships. I have developed strong problem-solving and leadership skills through my military service, which I now apply to the therapeutic process.
I utilize a variety of therapeutic modalities, including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Family Systems Therapy, and trauma-informed approaches, tailored to meet each client’s unique needs. My primary focus areas include trauma recovery, stress management, communication issues, and coping with life transitions. Additionally, I have a strong interest in working with veterans, active-duty military members, and their loved ones, serving anyone seeking to improve their emotional and relational well-being. Ultimately, my goal is to help clients achieve greater resilience, connection, and personal growth through thoughtful and informed therapeutic care.

My Areas of Expertise:
I enjoy working with a diverse population surrounding attachment, life transitions, stressful life events/trauma, and close relationships. My approach to therapy is client-centered. Each and every one of my clients is a unique person coming in with unique experiences and challenges, meaning they require a unique approach that best fits their goals. The therapeutic relationship between a client and therapist is one of the most important factors to client success. This is why I believe in a collaborative approach where my clients have a voice in their treatment. My clients are the experts of their lives and therapy can provide the tools they need to make changes, find acceptance, heal from past hurts, and develop a sense of identity within themselves. My Areas of Expertise:
As a therapist, I am always looking for strength within my clients. Professionally, I hold a high regard for the context of a person and their lived experience. I believe that sometimes, individuals just need an objective outside perspective in order to use their own unique strengths to move forward in a positive direction. My clients are the experts of their own lives and I remain open to hearing their unique experiences while we collaboratively set new goals and build skills that will foster success in their lives.
Certainly, the growth that happens inside of the therapy room is supremely important. However, the real change occurs outside of the therapy room; those are the experiences that truly change the person’s life and well-being for the better.
Above all, I truly value the process of therapy with all of its many hills and valleys. I look forward to the potential of working with you and all that we will learn together.

My areas of expertise:
In a world that strives to disconnect us from our innate power and intuition, my work centers around helping my clients embody the person they desire to be, with respect for their lived experiences. My goal is to work collaboratively with my clients to explore their inner world, help them draw meaning from their insights, and support them in developing the skills necessary to overcome any obstacles keeping them from their goals. I do not subscribe to the idea that I know what is best for you or have the “right” answers. Instead, I take a client-led approach allowing you to guide our journey at your own pace.
Using an integral approach, I treat mental health issues by exploring the entire person – mind, body, and spirit – in addition to understanding their environments, communities, and the world as a whole. My approach to therapy is liberation-based, trauma informed, and culturally-sensitive, and I strive to build upon the strengths and resilience you already possess. My education has equipped me with a wide range of frameworks and modalities that can be utilized to conduct therapy with individuals, groups, couples, and families.
My therapeutic style is centered around demonstrating empathy, compassion, and respect. I bring a grounding and caring energy to the spaces I occupy, and I strive to always hold space for my clients that feels safe and nurturing. One of my core strengths is my authenticity – I bring my whole self to the therapy room and invite you to do the same. I believe showing up authentically is the first step in healing our soul from unnecessary suffering. At my core, I’m a spiritual and naturally curious individual who enjoys exploring the complexity of the human experience.
